Can Bob Bradley Properly Manage USA With His Son On The Team?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Occasionally when you are the son of the manager, it can be a double edged sword. Those looking to cause shenanigans will claim that favouritism among father and son teams causes problems.  Nigel Clough is well acquainted with the difficulties of being the son of a team manager; his father Brian Clough, while managing Nigel at Nottingham Forest, refused to address his son by name, calling Nigel “our number 9”.  Managers who manage their sons may, far from being too lenient with their offspring, be too critical. It is a fine balancing act for the manager and the player and it can be problematic.

Not that this will be a problem for Bob Bradley and his son Michael during this summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa.  One exception to the rule seems to be the Bradley family, US Coach Bob Bradley and his son Michael, who will compete in the World Cup Finals together this summer in South Africa.

Michael Bradley was born in Princeton, New Jersey when Bob was the coach of the Princeton University soccer team. As a youngster, when Bob moved to Illinois to coach the Chicago Fire in the MLS, Michael was brought up in Palatine and at an early age, grew to love the game in the same way as his father.

After an impressive career in Junior leagues, Michael signed up with the MLS Superdraft in 2004 and was selected 36th overall by the New York Metrostars, who just so happened to be coached by his father. Michael’s first professional season didn’t turn out as planned when he suffered an awful foot injury, but his second year kicked off to a fantastic start for both of the Bradleys; Bob succeeded in leading his team to playoffs and Michael played in all but two of the games and headed his first goal to a shocked Chivas USA, securing a spot in the playoffs.

His energetic performances at the heart of midfield as an anchor for Metrostars had caught the eye in foreign climes and in January 2006, New York Metrostars allowed Bradley to leave the club when he was sold to SC Heerenveen of Holland.   Bradley’s success continued with Holland as he played well enough to land the team a place in the UEFA Cup and achieving an incredible 20 goals in the 2007-2008 season.

After Bradley’s success with Holland, bigger clubs started paying attention, including Birmingham City, whose relegation from the Premier League preventing them from getting him in their soccer gear. Instead , Borussia Moenchengladbach picked up midfielder Bradley, who has proven to be an asset, playing 58 games in the Bundesliga and racking up seven goals.

On the back of such impressive performances, Bradley’s promotion to the National Team ranks was assured. Bob Bradley began coaching the team in 2006, leading Michael to become  the core of the US midfield, setting up plays so that offensive players such as Landon Donovan can exercise the freedom to get towards the goal.

The US team is thankful for the father and son duo as they head on to the World Cup Finals in South Africa this summer.

Is Arsenal Going To Lose Youngsters?

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Arsenal’s deserved reputation as a conveyor belt for outstanding young talent is well deserved, however the Gunners could well pay the price for the success of their youth program, by losing a couple of their key young players in the January transfer window.

The truth of the matter is that for youngsters like Fran Merida and Jack Wilshere, the limited first team opportunities afforded to them, due to the fact Arsenal’s first team squad is well off for talented midfielders, has only allowed them to appear in some unimportant Champions League games of the Carling Cup.

The problem facing Arsene Wenger is that players like Wilshere and Merida are now ready for a more prominent first team role at the club. With a lot of talented midfielders to choose from including Diaby, Diarra, Rosicky, Narsi and Fabregas, Arshavin also needs a mention because he can play any role in the midfield, the midfield seems like a very unlikely place for young players to step up into the team.

The irony is, of course, that at the moment, the first grade team is dying for strikers at the moment, if Wilshere or Merida had been strikers they would be straight into the first team, due to injuries to Robin Van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner who are Arsenals lead strikers.

It seems likely that Wilshere will be taking a loan move away from Arsenal in the near future. He has been shown intrest from Burnley to move to Turf Moor, a move to the Bolton Wanderes by manager Owen Coyle makes it seems unlikely that much interest will be shown until they resolve their managerial situation. A loan to another Premier League team is what Wilshere seems likely to do. Recent rumours have leaked that Wilshere is contemplating a loan to West Ham for the rest of the season, and with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger stating that Wilshere needs first grade soccer experience the move to a West Ham soccer jersey may just take place.

The situation surrounding Fran Merida is more complicated. Transferred in much the same was as Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona to Arsenal as a young player, the youngster has drawn many comparisons with his Spanish counterpart. However unlike Fabregas, Merida has been unable to break into the Arsenal side despite his undoubted talent and with his contract due to expire in June 2010 and Arsene Wenger unable to persuade him to sign a new deal with the club, Merida has decided that Spain is were he wants to be. He will transfer to the club he followed as a boy; Atletico Madrid, however this move will be a permanent one, he will most likely never wear the Arsenal jersey again..

While Arsenal are well off for midfield talent, Arsenal fans can’t be feeling good that up and coming players that they trained and taught will be leave the club to make a name for themselves for another team, albeit temporarily in Wilshere’s case, simply because competition for places in the squad, in their position, is particularly strong.

Alex Ferguson To Sign Serie A Star

Monday, December 28th, 2009

It appears that Marek Hamsik has lined up a £25m transfer bid to move to Manchester United come January.

The form of veteran former England midfielder Paul Scholes, plus the fact that Ryan Giggs is not getting any younger has convinced Sir Alex Ferguson of the need to bring in a top notch quality replacement to bolster what is perceived by some critics to be United’s biggest weakness, midfield.

With interest from Liverpool and Chelsea as well, the signing of Hamsik would add attacking ability to Manchester United’s midfield. The Slovakian international started his career with Slovan Bratislava but quickly showed his quality to persuade Brescia to snap him up. He shone in Italy with Brescia scoring a hugely impressive ten goals from midfield and it wasn’t too long before Napoli paid over 5.5m Euros to take the player to the Sao Paolo.

Since 2007, Hamsik has established himself as one of the finest box to box, goalscoring midfielders in Serie A. Managing to score 25 goals in 81 games Hamsik’s form has been some of the best in the league. The Slovakian midfielder has quickly been named the best midfielder in Serie A by experts throughout Italy after his two goals against Juventus.

Hamsik’s efforts for his national team Slovakia have been extremely impressive. His efforts were a major part in Slovakia’s entry into the World Cup in 2010. He may well re-write the history of the soccer World Cup.

Despite interest in the player from Manchester United and Chelsea in recent weeks, Napoli have refused to sanction any idea that the player will be sold. This has been reiterated in recent weeks by sporting director Riccardo Bigon who stated:

“Manchester United are after Hamsik? If we rejected the rumours regarding a friend like [Carlo] Ancelotti and his Chelsea, it is obvious we also reject these rumours.”

These comments have since been substantiated by Napoli chairman Aurielo De Laurentiis who confirmed:

“Many clubs have requested Hamsik, it’s true, but he will stay with us for the long-term”

Whether in Summer, Napoli maintain the same comments is yet to be seen. Napoli’s short budget will defiantly play a factor in their decision to keep Hamsik or to sell him if a good offer is made.

Chelsea’s desperation to buy players may push any deals between the two clubs away. With Carlo Ancelotti given the go ahead to spend £25m on a player by Roman Abramovich in January they might beat Manchester United to the punch
