Chelsea’s Best Players

Friday, February 5th, 2010

When you have a squad that is so packed with talented individuals, it seems churlish to even suggest that there are around four or five players who generally make the team tick. This article outlines the players that without them Chelsea wouldn’t be able to compete.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry sets the benchmark with which the other players adhere to, captaining both club and country. A tough, uncompromising and brave defender, showing technically sound style and a great amount of skill. Always a danger at set pieces and never afraid to lead by example, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

2. ASHLEY COLE  (England, Left back)

He may be booed roundly by Arsenal fans every time he lines up against the Gunners, but despite their bile, Ashley Cole is still, arguably, the best left back in world soccer. His form and confidence has not been consistently great, but at his best his marauding runs down the left and quality balls into the box are only matched by his ability to shut down some of the world’s best players. noone else managers to keep players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quite during games. That’s no fluke, not many other left backs could do the job.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Essien’s injury last season showed how sorely he could be missed, even in a team filled with a world class midfield. Essien balances the team perfectly. With first class defensive skill and a high work rate not to mention a great intelligence for the game. He gets forward well and packs a powerful shot from distance. At today’s prices the 24.4 million pounds that it cost to buy him looks like a bargin.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

Who wouldn’t want a player like Lampard in the midifled scoring handfuls of goals. This season he has been deployed in a slightly deeper role under Carlo Ancelotti and the result has been a marked return to form for the midfielder and the goals are once again going in. His willingness to join the attack along with his ability to link with other players in the team make him dangerous up the front.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

It is hard to dispute the claim that Didier Drogba is the best striker in the world at the moment. Didier Drogba wearing the authentic Chelsea soccer jersey makes all goalkeepers fear the upcoming game. He may argue with officials and opposing players and fall over at the slightest touch but at times he can be unstoppable. His presence, goals and power are a key element of Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea and at times this season, he has carried the team on his back. His skill may give Chelsea what they need to end Manchester United’s recent dominance of the Premier League.

Five world class stars to make up just under half of a world class team.

What was Alex Ferguson Thinking When Signing Michael Owen

Monday, December 28th, 2009

One unexpected transfer that took place last Summer was that of Michael Owen, the often injured striker from Newcastle United who made the move to the Red Devils.

Experts were left scratching their head at this decision by Sir Alex. With Cristiano Ronaldo gone, the generally accepted view was that a current soccer great would appear in the latest Manchester United apparel to take over for him. Instead, Manchester United got Luis Valencia from Wigan and Michael Owen. A player who, for the past 5 years has had injury problem after injury problem as well as inconsistent fitness and form. The fact that he is a former Liverpool player only adds insult to injury. There were a few bemused faces around Old Trafford the day the deal was announced.

When the details of the deal became known along with Ferguson’s intentions for Owen, it became clear that Alex Ferguson had, as always had a plan. Michael Owen is intended to be used from the bench and is on a pay as you play deal at Manchester United. He would be used to assist from the bench when needed, he would not be the lone striker.

Not the best start Owen would have wanted at Manchester United, only featuring in a few games as a late substitute. However his adoption into the United ranks seemed complete when he came on in the Manchester derby game to net a last minute winner for United to deny City a point at Old Trafford. This goal was expected to kick start more involvement from Owen in the team, their was even talk about a place in the England soccer team if he could find consistent goals.

However since then, it hasn’t really worked out for Owen. Another two goals has given Owen four this season from 18 games, which is not great statically despite the fact that in many games he was a substitute, There seems to be an increasing feeling that Owen’s long term stay at Manchester United is looking shaky.

It seems highly unlikely that Owen will make it back onto the England squad. Fabio Capello’s need for players to be fit and playing consistently makes Owen’s chances very low.Over the past few years Owen  has managed to be neither of these things. However it should be known that Capello doesn’t seem to apply this rule to all of England’s strikers, Emile Heskey it seems is a shoe-in in every squad, regardless of whether he plays for Aston Villa or not.

The high point of the experiment so far has been Owen’s last minute goal against City.Owen needs to find goals and consistency over the remainder of the season or it seems unlikely that Alex Ferguson will continue his experiment onto the next season, much in the way youngster Darron Gibson is doing. The question remains whether Owen has the ability and fitness to earn a spot in next years team, however it seems likely that Sir Alex Ferguson’s gamble, in the long run, may not pay off.
