5. Belief: The players should manage to raise their expectations from them including self-control as one of the behaviors. Persuade them that they can change.

7. Goals: Start with multiple smaller goals, so that you can take your players along the path to changes. Help the players understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions.

9. Plan: In football coaching, teach a planned and systematic way of chasing the goals to players.

10. Progress: Tell them to be patient. Help the players realize the value of ups and downs in the path to improvement.

11. Setbacks: Train the players to accept that setbacks are bound to happen from time to time. Therefore, try to learn something new from every setback.

12. Remembrance: Last but not the least, help the players understand that there is a reason behind their attempts to change. They should always be clear about what are they doing and why. What will their future be like, if they don’t change.

For a soccer player to achieve a perfect performance state, the player must be trained for relaxed swiftness. It means possessing energy without tension.

When it comes to soccer coaching, I’ve observed that most of the coaches often are the ex-players. Yet, there are a number of issues that they are forced to handle. Most of these issues are a result of lack of communication. There are some major communication issues that you must understand as a coach to make your job easy and more effective.

In the course of watching the young players on field, coaches often get emotional. They forget that they have the duty to observe the players analytically rather than merely watching them play. As such they are not able to see the key points that could make all the difference in their team’s performance. The coaches fail to have an effective conversation that could help the players get to the winning post.

Even though the coaches are well versed with the technicalities of the game, they are not trained specifically on communication. For example; in soccer coaching, use of a video or a flip chart is not very common since most coaches don’t know about them. Engage the boys in dribbling and shooting: This is a simple practice that engages all the players. Have the kid’s line up on the single goal line. Now, spread the balls all over the soccer field. Touch and Go: It’s a very interesting game which kids love to play. In this game, tell them to make two lines at a distance of less than 40 feet from the goal post. Moreover, it’s the goalie who should protect the goalpost. Position yourself anywhere amongst the two lines.

Pass the ball to either of the queue and with only one tap teach them to shoot or pass the ball to another. The intention should be to switch the ball into goal. Continue practicing the game after the goalie has returned the ball.

Swap your goalies in between the practice meetings if there are more than two goalkeepers. This game has the dual benefit of instilling team spirit and bettering the shooting skills. The goalkeeper becomes skilled at protecting the ball from converting to a goal.

Keeping the control of the ball: This exercise allows the players to learn to advance with the ball while retaining its control. Engage two players, one protecting the ball and the other attacking it. Guide them to play their respective roles and win points every time any player wins over the other.

1. Don’t make speeches. Especially if you’re coaching young kids, making them sit through long lectures is a great way to bore them out of their minds and disinterested in soccer really fast. Whatever you have to say to your player during a training sessions on game, just make sure you keep it simple and short.

2. Don’t complicate things. Strip every drill to its basics and test it with your players making sure they are ready to move forward and perform it well. I can bet your players will lose their interest in the practice sessions if you try to give them over complicated exercises with lots of instructions.

3. Don’t be a ball boy- it’s critical that you understand that it’s not your task to run and catch the balls. Doing that can dangerously unbalance the player-coach equation. If a player shoots a ball out of bounds, make them go get it.

4. It’s important that you don’t allow the ball-kids to join practice if they are there just to get the balls. This simply signals a laxity in discipline- ball boys are just there to get the ball. If they ask to be part of the practice session, make them know that they can’t do both.

5. Never, ever criticize the player. If a player misses a shot or fumbles, don’t blame them. Point out the flaws in their technique or skill and do that calmly. Screaming at a player for being ’stupid’ is a great way to make them want to leave your team.
